What is the difference between Counselling and Therapy?

Counselling: People considered to be the "worried well." These individuals have issues and concerns within their lives that do not warrant psychiatric intervention such as placement within a mental health facility, for example, a psychiatric hospital.  These individuals do not have, and have never had a psychiatric diagnosis.  The following are examples of diagnosis: Bipolar, Schizophrenia, Major Depression, PTSD, Borderline.

Therapy:  Persons with a history of mental illness, have had placement for their mental illness, receive services, either past or present from a Psychiatrist, take or need medication for their mental illness, require therapy.  If you received psychiatric treatment as a child or adolescent you will probably require therapy rather than counselling.
